So long, Blogspot. Hello, Wordpress!

I've been wanting to move my blog away from Blogspot for a while but could never be bothered to actually do it. This week was the tipping point though, and I've now fully migrated over to  https://patsypoomakes.wordpress.com/ . The blogspot address will remain here but all new posts will only appear at  https://patsypoomakes.wordpress.com/ .  There are lots of reasons for the move but my biggest one is how hard Blogger has made it for people to subscribe to receive new posts via email. It's such a basic requirement but apparently, they think it's too much to offer.  I'm basing this purely on how I myself prefer to consume this stuff. I can't be arsed with feed readers anymore and emails are easy and convenient. When I receive one, if I fancy reading it, I will click through to it and, if not, I'll just delete it. Another reason is the spat between Google (owners of Blogger) and Instagram/Facebook/Meta. I don't even know if this is still the case anymore ...

{Megan Nielsen} Kelly Skirt

Coming at you today with an underrated little gem: the  Kelly skirt  from Megan Nielsen.  I've had the pattern printed and ready to go for a really long time but for some reason, I hadn't got around to making it yet. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I ordered this cotton linen from Sew Me Sunshine for a shirt. When it arrived, however, I decided it'd be too heavy for a shirt  - serves me right for not paying attention to the description - so I had to put on my thinking cap on. Don't get me wrong, it's really lovely fabric. I've used it before in fact, for a Southport dress , but I only had 1.5m this time so I had my work cut out for me. When I happened to have it laying side by side with this viscose from the shirt I'm wearing here, a lightbulb went off in my head. I needed an outfit that would put both of these together! That's when I landed on the Kelly and the 1.5m of fabric I had was enough for the size I was making - a Medium. It was easy and quick to ...

{Victory Patterns} Madeleine Skirt - and a Liberty Granville shirt

So far I haven't done a lot of sewing this year but I made an awesome shirt  last weekend during a surprise real life buddy sewing session with Mel. It was the best start to the new year! We went fabric shopping, did aerial yoga and had a bloody awesome time together. It was so good! But today I wanted to share our last buddy sew of 2019 which was the  Madeleine skirt  from Victory Patterns. This skirt has been on my list for a very long time. I've seen so many gorgeous versions of it as well. It seems to be one of those patterns that looks good on everyone. It has massive pockets, removable suspenders, topstitching for days and a super fancy lapped zip. What's not to like? I made a size 8 as it comes. However, after trying it on before hemming, I chopped 3 inches off the length because on me it was neither midi nor maxi and it looked odd. I felt like I was drowning in fabric slightly. Speaking of fabric... Oh my, do I love me some denim? This one is a lightw...

{Sew Liberated} Estuary skirt

A couple of months ago I was contacted by Jen from  Sew by the Sea  in Margate. She asked if I was interested in working with one of her fabrics and then sharing a post about my experience. Not being one to say no to gorgeous fabric I agreed and off I went to their website to pick something. I hadn't decided what I wanted to make yet and they have a great choice of fabrics, so it took me a while. When I saw this  Pink Floral Ravishing Rayon  by Dashwood Studio, I thought I would probably come back to it in the end. And I did. I'm a huge lover of coral. Unlike most people, I really like grey. And yellow is another favourite of mine. How could I not? I went backwards and forwards on my pattern choice for a long time. This post is actually more delayed than I would've liked, due to summer holiday disruptions. However, that turned out to be a blessing because the pattern I ultimately went with was released while we were away. I chose the newly-released  ...

{Tilly and the Buttons} Ness Skirt

This pattern has been in my pattern box since it came out. Not only that, I won a kit to make this skirt from Fabricate 's Sew Saturday celebrations last year. That was in October! I can't believe how long it's taken me to come round to finally making this. There always seemed to be something getting in the way... The Ness skirt is another hit from Her Majesty, Queen Tilly. It has a yoke in the back for shaping, jeans style pockets on the back and the front and there's a zip fly closure. The pattern offers 2 options - a mini skirt and a below the knee version, with a centre front split. It's a very jeans-like skirt, actually. It would be a great warm-up for someone who's never made jeans before. You get all the traditional jeans styling, topstitching and heavier fabric without the potential headache that trouser fitting can sometimes cause. For my version, I chose the mini skirt option. I was a bit worried it might be too short and I considered lengtheni...

{Sew Over It} Pussy Bow Blouse and {Deer and Doe} Azara Skirt

Hello again! Today I have a full outfit to share and - spoiler alert! - I BLOODY LOVE IT! I'm turning 40 next week 😱 and I'm going out for afternoon tea with my best girls to celebrate. Nothing too fancy but I wanted to give myself a birthday present for it. Enter the  Pussy Bow Blouse  from Sew Over It. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is the nicest, poshest, most delicate thing I have in my wardrobe.

{Deer and Doe} Chardon skirt - the reboot

Still drawing from my holiday wardrobe, today I have a skirt to share. If you follow me on  Instagram , you might remember one of my holiday posts, where I said a lady had shouted a compliment at my outfit from inside her car while we were crossing the street. I was a little embarrassed (people were looking! 😂) but it was quite nice, actually. This is what I was wearing that day. After finishing my Landers (coming soon) I still had quite a bit of twill left. I didn't want another pair of trousers out of it and the fabric is too heavy to be anything other than bottoms. Maybe a skirt? Well, I've been meaning to revisit the Deer and Doe Chardon  for quite some time so I took the opportunity and ran with.

{Sew Over It} Watermelons Lizzie Skirt

I know it's now October and the weather is starting to turn. But my Brasilian side would be getting ready for summer right about now. So today I'm sharing a very weather innapropriate tropical looking project. It's my Lizzie Skirt from Sew Over It.

{sewing} Arielle skirt

One of the projects that came to life during the Me Made May whirlwind this year was this gorgeous  Arielle skirt , by Tilly and the Buttons. I knew I wanted to make it as soon as the pattern was released, all the way back when. I bought the PDF straightaway and printed it out. But it stayed in a corner for over a year - almost two! "Why?" I hear you ask. Well...

{sewing} I'm back in the game!

It's been a while. Mostly due to moving house and all the adjustments that go with that. Before and afterwards. I didn't touch my sewing machine for months. But the dust seems to have properly settled now and I feel I'm ready to revive the blog. Today I'm going to share a skirt I was inspired to make after seeing  La La Land  for the first time.

{sewing} Sewaholic Hollyburn Skirt

Hello again! I know it's been a little while since my last post but life has been getting in the way a bit - in the good sense - so I haven't had a lot of time to take photos and write up posts. Which is why this skirt has been finished for weeks now and I've only just managed to get it posted today.

{sewing} Colette Zinnia skirt

Yes, it looks like I'm on a roll at the moment. I've been super productive these last few weeks and I'm loving it! The only problem is that I've been churning out so many new things that I can't keep up with the blogging. Gaaahhh! I guess you win some and you lose some, right? Anyway, today I've got the  Zinnia skirt  by Colette Patterns. I have had my eye on this skirt since I started getting into sewing, a couple of years ago. I've always thought it looked beautiful and wanted to make one for myself. Fast forward to a couple of months ago: Zinnia was Colette's pattern of the month, which means it was on sale, and I decided to bite the bullet and go for it. Boy, am I glad I did!

{sewing} Two Sewaholic Crescent Skirts

Today I give not one, but *two* finished items in not one but *two* different locations! Ooooo... I know, I can barely contain the excitement, too! So, the first one is the last stop on my "sewing tour of Italy" [insert sad face here] and for that, we're in Amalfi , one of the bookends of the Amalfi Drive . The other being  Sorrento , which I fell in love with while we were there. This is my second version of the  Crescent Skirt  by Canadian company  Sewaholic Patterns . It's a brilliant pattern. The instructions were very straight forward and easy to follow. The construction is different from any skirt I've done before. Really enjoyable. I love all the details: the pieced together yoke, the slashed pockets, the topstitching. I went a bit fancy with my pockets topstitching in this version, look!  The fabric I used was some medium weight cotton I've had for ages, left over from a bag I made a couple of years ago. The colour is great and very summer...

{sewing} Sew Over It Tulip Skirt in Florence!

Hi there! I'm back again and this time we're in Florence, Tuscany. We used Florence as a base and visited Pisa and Siena while we were there. It's one of those places that, no matter where you go, you will find something interesting to look at or do. I actually regret that we didn't spend more time there, so we'll have to go back and fix that. ;) Today I'm sharing my  Sew Over It Tulip Skirt , which I really love but I was having a terrible sewing day while I was making it.

{sewing} Chardon Skirt

The next project I'd like to share is the gorgeous Chardon skirt by Deer and Doe. I can't overstate how pleased I am with it! It's a high waisted skirt with inverted box pleats all the way around. The contrast band is an option, as well as a bow on the back, which I chose to omit. Deer and Doe Chardon

{sewing} Miette Skirt

Over the last several months I've been on a massive sewing kick, showing no signs of stopping any time soon. Having made a crap tonne of things, I decided I'd revisit the idea of blogging so I can have a record of what I made, how, when and so I can see myself improve. The first item I'm going to share is a Tilly and the Buttons'  Miette skirt . Tilly's book  was what encouraged me to try sewing clothes for myself. The Miette skirt isn't on the book but after having tried 3 patterns from it and loving them all, I knew I'd love this if I bought it.

And then I made a skirt

Hell yeah! I made a skirt! I made it. A skirt. A MAXI skirt! AND... It's knit fabric! That's right, k-n-i-t fabric. It stays on and everything. I'm so proud of myself. Don't get me wrong, there are a LOT of things wrong with it. But I learned so much and I'm cutting myself some slack as it was the first one. Ready to cut I used this formula to make mine but if I made it again I'd have to make the waistband shorter because mine was a bit too baggy after wearing it all day. I fixed it now. ...
